Memes Outside
A simple gesture, repeated many times: a hand holding up a phone that shows a CC0 meme card minted on Ethereum, in front of the street art of Newtown and Enmore in Sydney's inner west. Each photograph sets something small and permanent against something large and fragile, a provenance-locked image on a little screen against anonymous paintings that the council, the weather or the next artist could cover at any time.
This is work deeply steeped in the history of photography and image, counter-cultural gesture and artistic irreverence. Those ideas are explored more fully in The Long Read.
Articulate published the coordinates of every location in the book so that anyone could go and stand in the same place, although many of those walls have since been painted over. The collection is complete, and the minted photographs remain as a record of paintings that are, in many cases, no longer there.
